Grande Montessori School was
founded in January 1981 to provide the best possible preprimary education
experience for Central Coast children between two and six years old.
After 10 years in a rented facility the school moved to its present
location in September 1990. The school has been independently owned
and operated by Joyce and Mike Miller since its beginning.
Joyce Miller, the school's director of education,
earned a bachelor of science degree in early childhood education
from California State University Northridge. She received her Montessori
certification from Progressive Montessorians in San Diego in July
1980 and has since done extensive graduate work in Montessori. She
is a graduate of the Oruff-Schulwerk school of music training. Mike
Miller, school administrator, was awarded bachelor of arts degrees
in English and journalism from California State University Northridge.
He received his Montessori training from the Montessori World Educational
Institute in San Luis Obispo, Calif. All classroom teachers are
Montessori trained, and all staff have a thorough knowledge of the
Montessori method and the developmental needs of children.
